Since 2008 Hatua Likoni has supported Twaayf Children's Center, a home for orphans and vulnerable children, and Madaraka Nursery School, a low cost nursery school providing education and free meals to children from poor families in Likoni. In 2009 Hatua Likoni purchased a home for Twaayf, installed electricity and funded renovations to provide more living space for the kids. In 2010 Hatua purchased land and constructed a 6 room school house for Madaraka. Throughout, we have sponsored Twaayf's children in Likoni's top primary academy and provided food for all of Twaayf and Madaraka's meals. In 2011, with support from SDL Foundation, we provided 67,140 meals to Twaayf and Madaraka. For Madaraka this support meant the school was able to use the fees collected from students to pay teachers and run sustainably.
Over the 3 ½ years of Hatua's support for Twaayf and Madaraka their children have grown and their organizations have developed. Thanks to their leadership and the generosity of their donors Twaayf and Madaraka have developed to the point of no longer needing Hatua's support. We are proud to have helped these organizations become self sufficient and we wish them all the best as they continue to serve Likoni's neediest children.
